The world’s youngest billionaire is the hard working, intelligent Bill Gates. This man independently started his own computer company and built it up to a 230 billion dollar empire. Bill Gates changed the way the world uses computers by building his company, Microsoft, from the ground up, enforcing that computer software is illegal to steal, and by making personal computers available for everyone to have in their own home. Bill Gates started his computer company,Microsoft, and worked relentlessly to make his company a success. Gates was fascinated with computers all of his life and started his first computer programming business with his friends when he was only in the eighth grade (Schuman 25). His round the clock working on his company eventually paid off. In 1981 Gate’s company’s revenues were up to 16 million dollars, however this was not enough for Gates. He desired and planned to run every other computer company out of business (Strother 76). Being a strong and fearless businessman helped Gates accomplish his goals of running his competitors out of business and building Microsoft into the company that it is today. Gates built up his company from a few employees in a small office to one of the worlds largest computer companies with his hard work and dreams of having computers available to everyone. With his company Gates created new computer software that improved how computers worked and made them easier for everyone to use. Building Microsoft contributed greatly to making technology as advanced as it is now. Not only did Gates build Microsoft but he also showed people that they would not get away with stealing computer software. Bill Gates and his company prosecuted many individuals and companies for software theft to show the world that intellectual property cannot be stolen without punishment. In 1998 Gates noticed that there was a huge gap between the number of computers being sold each year and the number of computer software. He quickly realized that many people were stealing computer software online. Gates knew that using computer software without paying was illegal and he intended to make everyone that stole their software pay the price for their crime. When Microsoft first discovered that their software was being stolen they decided that if people were going to steal software then they should steal Microsoft’s software and eventually Gates would find a way to collect money from his stolen property. Microsoft went after over 80 companies that they discovered were using their computer software without purchasing it and they pressed legal action and in the end got the money they had earned (Down to Earth). Before Microsoft prosecuted these companies for illegally downloading software, stealing intellectual property online was not considered important and legal action was almost never taken against those who committed the theft. Thanks to Bill Gates and his company intellectual theft is now taken much more seriously in the eyes of the law. While Gates pursued many people who wronged his company he continued to go after his dream of having a computer in every home. â€Å"Microsoft has spent its first 15 years blazing the trail to the personal computer. Its intent was to make the PC available and accessible to everyone† (Strother 84). Bill Gates dream since he was in college was to have a computer available to everyone in their home. Originally his idea seemed silly to his friends, the thought that uneducated ordinary people without special training in computers would have access to one in their home, but to Gates it was a very real possibility. His dreams are the reason that computers are now available at low prices and are easy to use and understand. Gates wanted this dream to become a reality so people could have easier access to information and to push the limits of technology further. Due to the nonstop efforts of Bill Gates and his co workers computers are available in the majority of homes and also in libraries and other public places like hotels and internet cafes. Making computers accessible to the general public has made Gates a well liked man around the world. Bill Gates is a very well respected man to almost everyone in the world. His hard work and dedication to building his company without having it handed to him has gained him respect from many. Although throughout the years there have been times when Bill Gates has appeared rude and arrogant for example in 1998 his company lost a legal battle over Microsoft having monopoly over computers which lost him popularity in the publics eye (India Today) but he has always recovered his reputation. Bill Gates has forever changed the way that people look at computers and has done the public a great service by improving technology which has improved the day to day lives of most Americans. Even though some many despise Gates because he is the most wealthy person in the world the general opinion of him is very positive. By building the his company, protecting intellectual property that belonged to him, and making computers available to everyone in their home Bill Gates has permanently changed the way the world uses computers. His never ending hard work and constant need to improve upon his work has made Bill Gates the wealthiest man in the world. A worthy note to his writing is his use of stream-of-consciousness narrative to assist in achieving his goal of portraying perspectives of the same events through different people and levels of emotional and logical intensities. Darl Bundren is the first and most important narrator of the fifteen due to his elaborate descriptions. His version of events seemed to be the easiest to interpret and the least subjective. Another significant character to the novels dynamics is Jewel who partook is several of the main events in the novel.Faulkners need for fifteen individual narrators suggest his need for fifteen different views of every situation. From Darl he obviously wants a character that is more isolated from the others that will be able to mediate between the hectic events of the characters and the understanding o f the reader. Jewel on the other hand brings out the more disturbed side of Faulkners imagination. He is the illegitimate child of Addie and the minister giving him a predisposed sense of being an outcast. His neurotic qualities include being impatient and ill tempered although his love for horses represents a more gentle side. These characters, when compared, often represent far extremes of perspective although the also show similar ideals on the subjects of luck and fate, honor and dishonor, as well as life and death.The Bundren family is extremely underprivileged in all aspects of living. Tough times have fallen upon them and they survive on a meager income and they scrape together odd end jobs. Jewel and Darl are going to miss their mothers death for three dollars to transport lumber. The family lives in an everlasting state of need, always short of cash. Darl most likely views the family situation as being more fate then a matter of luck and Jewel more as bad luck. Darls passag es possess intense imagery and metaphor that suggest his more accepting view of his mothers death and the wagons broken wheel. Jewel, on the other hand, most likely accepts the job of transporting lumber more willingly then Darl because he knows that one must make there own luck and in this case there own money.Darl believes the families poverty is more predisposed to them rather then subject to change by going out of their way. Another example of Darls perspective of fate is when he burns down the barn to try and end the familys struggle to try and bring their mother to her burial site. He accepts his mothers death as a part of life and wishes to be done with the unnecessary hardship. Darl saves the coffin from floating down stream when they are on their journey to Jefferson and he saves her from the burning barn, other attributes Faulkner adds to give Jewel a stronger sense of luck over fate. He could have known that fate caused is mothers coffin to almost float away.On the matter of honor and dishonor the two think fairly similar. They both take their family duty seriously and strive to hold the family together. Darl is the only character that knows that the minister conceived Jewel, and he manages to withhold this from the other in order to not divide the family, especially at such tribulating times. They also both hold honor in different things. Jewel had a deep love of horses and when Anse sells his horse to buy mules he is deeply sadden and angry about the loss of his cherished horse.When Darl is swept away to the asylum he as completely lost his mind, almost out of convenience to appease the family. Thought the novel he was the isolated brother who was more intelligent, and with mother buried and the journey almost complete they find little need for his presence. He served his family with honor and was attempting to distinguish of the corpse to remove her burden from the family.It is most obvious that Darl has an acceptance for death that none of the o ther have the intelligence to understand. He repeatedly asks Jewel if he realizes that Addie is going to die and he is unable to grasp it. The journey is tough on the family and Darl truly sees no point in transporting the body to a gravesite where Addies family is buried when the odor the body is giving off is so unbearable. To the other characters he almost seems insane because he is so accepting of death. Jewel especially seems ignorant to the idea of his mothers death even after she has passed away.Collectively the characters of As I Lay Dying provide a complete account of Faulkners story. Jewel and Darl especially allow Faulkner to look at opposite extremes of the events the novel includes. Although the two often clash in their actions, they ultimately form a team to give the novel its abstract feel.
